The Glowiak lastname

The Glowiak lastname seems to be quite ordinary and becomes from Polish noun "glowa" (head). The lastname (or a nickname) was first mentioned in 1678.

In 1998 there lived 637 people with Glowiak lastname in Poland, and in 2002 that number increased to 787. Most of them live in the south-eastern Poland in Rzeszow and Lancut neighbourhood. Thus it seems there could be the family nest, however the lastname might have become in many different places independently. Moreover, in late 19th and early 20th century most of Polish immigratants to the U.S. came from Rzeszow area (Medynia, Czarna, Lukawiec, Laka, Pogwizdow, Krzemienica, Strazow, etc.).

Nowadays many people with Glowiak lastname live in western Poland (Wroclaw, Gorzow, Legnica) which was probably caused by the migration and repatriation from eastern lands after the Second World War. However, most of those famiilies had their ancestors in Lancut, Rzeszow or Przeworsk.
